Superstar Mariah Carey is grappling with an unimaginable tragedy after announcing the heartbreaking loss of both her sister, Alison Carey, and her mother, Patricia Carey, on the same day.
The Grammy-winning artist revealed the devastating news that two beloved family members had passed away over the weekend.
“I’m heartbroken because I lost my mom this past weekend,” Carey shared, adding, “Tragically, on that same day, my sister also passed away in a heartbreaking way.”
While the cause of death for Alison and Patricia has not yet been disclosed, Mariah expressed gratitude for the time she spent with her mother before her passing. “I feel really lucky that I got to spend the last week with my mom before she left us,” said the singer.
Patricia Carey, a former opera singer trained at Juilliard and a vocal coach, shared three children—Alison, Mariah, and their brother, Morgan—with her ex-husband Alfred Roy Carey. The couple divorced when Mariah was just three years old.
Mariah has previously opened up about her complex relationship with her mother. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer described their bond as “complicated,” noting that it wasn’t a straightforward or simple relationship. She also addressed her strained connection with her siblings, revealing that for her emotional and physical well-being, she chose to limit contact with them.
During this incredibly challenging time, Carey expressed her appreciation for the support she has received, asking for privacy as she mourns the loss of her mother and sister.
We send our deepest sympathies and strength to Mariah Carey as she navigates this profound loss. Losing two loved ones in a single day is an unimaginable sorrow.
